Plastic is used in the world, and some people turn to biodegradable plastic bags.
However, new research from the United StatesK.
This suggests that these bags may not be eco-friendly.
They look very friendly.
The study, conducted by the University of Plymouth international marine waste research team, examined five different bags and found that the bags described as \"biodegradable\" were in three-year period.
Tony Walker, professor of environmental studies at Halifax Dalhousie University, said the results show that only biodegradable bags are eco-friendly
Conscious people should consider using a bag that can be packed.
Walker recently spoke with Porcia Clark, the host of CBS Information Morning.
The interview has been edited for length and clarity.
I have a feeling that I have been using these so-
It\'s called biological release bag.
What is this America? K.
What about their findings?
It\'s frustrating, isn\'t it?
Researchers at the University of Plymouth began testing five bags: two of which were labeled oxobiodegradable[
Designed to degrade into pieces faster than traditional plastic bags]
The other is biodegradable, compostable bags and traditional plastic bags.
They tested them in the marine environment, buried under the soiland in the open air of the university campus.
What happened to them?
In fact, in the marine environment, the compostable bag disappeared almost immediately within three months.
This is really acceptable.
This is a plant creature. based product.
In the university campus, after only nine months, all the bags were broken down into pieces [
Exposed to the air].
But in the last few days, the iconic images that some of your listeners may have seen on social media are biodegradable bags, oxo-
Biological bags and conventional bags. [Those]
After three years in the marine environment, everything was in good condition and could still accommodate two kilograms of groceries.
When the bags are exposed to the air, and when they are in the marine environment, what is the difference between them?
All the bags broke up in the air.
So, no matter what type of bag you buy, they break up.
But of course they won\'t leave.
I think a lot of people are thinking that if they buy a biodegradable bag, it will disappear, but that\'s not the case.
It stays in the environment as a smaller plastic.
Didn\'t they really disappear?
They are just smaller pieces that can still be absorbed by wildlife and the natural environment? Exactly.
Of the five bags they tested, only one was a real plant --
Made of natural materials.
For example, I see on the manufacturer\'s website that biodegradable bags made of plastic contain only up to natural products, meaning that more than 75 are still Oil --based.
When they break down, they just make smaller microplastics that go into the environment.
Same for oxo.
Biological bags can also be removed.
So, really, it\'s just a combination of all the plants.
Bags that really break down into natural states.
For example, what does this say about the plastic bag ban that we introduced, and the fact that we turned to some other alternatives?
The researchers are very skeptical about all of these alternatives, because unless there is a waste logistics that can manage stackable bags instead of recyclable high bags
The traditional plastic bag of density polyethylene, then I think it is really a non-
Because it can bring confusion to consumers, it can also bring real problems to people who carry out recycling or waste management.
Does that mean we just ban all non-plastic bags?
Well, not necessarily.
I have been advocating traditional plastic bags for a long time.
But I think what we should consider is not just a substitute for plastic bags, but to stick to cotton bag
s, so something that can be reused and durable will be used again and again.
I think this is the way to find these single options.
Whether it\'s a traditional plastic or a plastic replacement, they still contain a lot of plastic polymers in general.
